When to test a difficult shot before a fixed product launch

If the release date cannot move, an untested visual idea should not remain unresolved until post-production. Test the production's most consequential unknowns before locking the main execution plan.

Test the uncertainty, not the whole film

Identify the shot that could force a change of method: an unusual movement, complex reflection, generated character or difficult transition. Define what the test needs to demonstrate and which details can remain rough.

A useful test is detailed enough to support a decision. It need not be a fully finished miniature commercial.

Leave room for review and an alternative

Work backwards from delivery and include time for the brand to assess the test. Record what passed, what still needs work and who decides the next step.

Agree a workable alternative alongside the preferred treatment. If the test fails, the team should know whether to simplify the movement, change the method or revise the shot. That protects the underlying idea while making the schedule more credible.
