What can you prepare before the product sample arrives?

A missing sample need not stop all preparation. The brief, storyboard and location planning can move ahead, while decisions that depend on the physical product remain clearly marked for confirmation.

Establish what will actually arrive

Confirm the model, revision, quantity, packaging and accessories. Is it a working unit, a visual mock-up or a final retail product? A hollow shell may help establish composition but cannot support a genuine operating demonstration.

Build a shot list around what each image needs to explain. Record any dimensions or mounting points that must be checked before custom props are finished.

Treat stand-ins as rehearsal tools

For a hypothetical pump bottle, a substitute can test a hand movement or camera route. It cannot confirm the final label position, pump action or reflections. Those decisions need the actual sample.

When the shipment arrives, inspect it against the approved information before calling it shoot-ready. Identify damaged surfaces, missing accessories and revised details, then decide which shots can proceed and which still need work.
